US military Infra Red beacon.
Designed for generation 1-3+ Night Vision goggles. Emits a high intensity Infra Red light that alternately flashes similar to a police light bar. The back and forth flashing produces about 2 flashes per second. The alternating flash was designed into the signal to prevent friendly forces from mistaking the flashing for gunfire with night vision goggles on.
- Attaches securely to a 9 volt battery.
- Battery life is typically 35+ hours.
- Weight is less than 1 ounce and measures 1"x1"x.5".
- Does not emit visible light, MUST use Night Vision goggles or camera.
- Visibility is 7-10 miles up to 10,000 feet in optimum conditions.
- The Army uses these in Afghanistan for lighting up major roads between posts. They duct tape the battery and light together, than use a regular sling shot to launch them out onto the sides of the road.
